How We Turned Roadwork Reporting into a Practical Mobile App

Outdated reporting systems are one of the biggest roadblocks in managing infrastructure projects. Especially in sectors like road construction, where the volume of data is massive and decisions need to be made fast.
In 2023, we were approached by a major organization overseeing roadwork progress. Their internal system was typical: Excel spreadsheets, static PDFs, and dense summaries. Executives were spending hours trying to pinpoint delays or understand project status.

The problem wasn’t a lack of data — it was how that data was presented.

Why Mobility Is No Longer Optional

Today’s decision-makers are constantly on the move. They need to make calls from meetings, in transit, even at the airport. That means the right tool has to fit in their pocket, launch instantly, and speak a clear visual language.

Our answer? No more complicated dashboards. No more desktop-only tools. We focused entirely on building a native mobile app. Just the data that matters, clearly visualized through charts, filters, and simple dashboards.

What the Solution Looked Like

We built a native iOS app that connects to the central infrastructure system via REST API and translates complex data into digestible analytics. The app features:

  • Region-, highway-, and site-specific data views
  • Custom dashboards tailored to user roles (inspectors, analysts, executives)
  • Intuitive navigation, even for non-technical users
  • Real-time data updates
  • A clean replacement for bulky PDFs and spreadsheets

If a user wants to know: Where’s the delay?, What stage is this site in?, Is the contractor on schedule? — the app provides the answer in under 10 seconds.

The Stack Behind the Interface

We used proven, stable technologies:

  • Swift (iOS)
  • Charts for data visualization
  • MagicalRecord for local data storage
  • REST API for backend integration
  • UI design built and tested in Figma

What It Delivered

Before: Users had to request a report, wait for a PDF, open it on a computer, and search manually.

Now: Open the app, select a highway, see real-time progress.

The client gained:

  • Instant access to critical operational data
  • Reduced pressure on the analytics team
  • True mobile decision-making capability
  • Greater transparency and oversight

What This Means for Other Organizations

If you have an internal system that’s cluttered, overly technical, and built for desktop use — it might be time to rethink how your teams access information. Especially in industries where timing, geography, and contractor performance matter.

Sometimes real progress doesn’t require AI or blockchain — it starts with a simple question: Can we make this faster and easier to use?

The answer is yes. And it often begins with a mobile app built specifically for your workflow — not a one-size-fits-all SaaS tool.
